Oxford-Elgin Child and Youth Centre is excited to announce that we are
currently in our 25th year of operation.
Our agency was established in October of
1987 to serve Oxford County. We were the first centre in Ontario to be
accredited by Children’s Mental Health Ontario in 1991. Governed by a 12
member Board of Directors we represent various communities and interests
throughout the County. Our Centre is funded through the Ministry of Children
and Youth Services and Ministry of Community and Social Services.
On October 15, 1987 we received our initial
referral call and our first intake appointment was November 22, 1987. To
date we have received over 10,000 referrals.
On January 1,
2009 our agency expanded its services into Elgin County and we were re-named
Oxford-Elgin Child & Youth Centre. Our 12 member Board is now comprised
of equal volunteers from Oxford and Elgin Counties.

"IMPORTANT
INFORMATION"
Children's Mental Health Week is
Coming
May 6 - 12, 2012
1 in 5 Ontario children and youth has a
mental health problem - That's about 500,000 kids. Disorders range from
anxiety, depression and conduct disorder to attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder, eating disorders, schizophrenia, and bi-polar disorder. Left
untreated, mental health disorders can lead to school failure, family
conflicts, drug abuse, violence, and even suicide.
The good news is that help is available and treatment works!
Each year, Ontarians mark the first full week of May as
Children's
Mental Health Week. This
important week is about:
- >increasing awareness of the signs of
child and youth mental health problems
- >decreasing stigma, and
- >understanding that help is available
and it works!
Previous Children’s Mental Health Weeks have been a huge success.
Across the province,
>child and youth mental health centres hosted open houses, school
yard walks, shopping mall kiosks, and informational workshops in support of
child and youth mental health
>many towns and cities throughout Ontario issued a proclamation
recognizing the first full week in May as Children’s Mental Health Week
>schools participated in stigma-reducing poster campaigns and
Brave New Minds
walks
>radio and television shows interviewed child and youth mental
health experts
So mark your calenders to recognize and celebrate
Children's Mental Health Week
